What to Look for When Considering a Crew Neck Cashmere Sweater
January 27, 2012Many people absolutely adore the look and feel of pure cashmere; and for good reason. If you have never had a sweater or other item made from cashmere, you are missing out on one of life’s simple indulgences. Cashmere is soft and smooth and is perfect for making a number of different types of garments.
One of the most popular items available in luxurious cashmere is the crew neck cashmere sweater. This is probably one of the items people enjoy the most because its design allows the wearer to be wrapped in the wonderful softness that only pure cashmere can provide. However, there are certainly many other sweater designs that would make a perfect complement to any wardrobe. In fact, many men and women enjoy having an assortment of different sweaters that they can wear depending on their mood or where they are going.
While a crew neck cashmere sweater can be quite expensive, there are some selections that can be very affordable. Purchasing a cashmere item is something you need to be careful about; there are many products that will be labeled as cashmere, but in reality may only be a blend. If you are looking for the real thing, be sure you look for a label that states the item is 100% pure cashmere. Of course, this will also increase the price of the item, but many people feel that the additional cost is money well spent.
Another thing that many people may not be aware of is the fact that there can be different thicknesses in the cashmere items they are considering. For example, one sweater may be two ply, while another is three or four ply. This refers to the number of fibers or strands that are twisted together to create the yarn that is used in manufacturing the sweater. The more strands an item has, the thicker it will be. Of course, just because one sweater is thicker than another one does not necessarily make it better. There are times when you might want a lighter weight sweater, such as in the spring or summer. These items certainly have their place in any wardrobe.
However, another important factor that should be considered when purchasing any type of cashmere product is its quality. Cashmere is graded according to its quality and as one might expect, the higher the grade, the more expensive the item will be. But, of course, this is true with just about anything you purchase. Sometimes you may find that you do not need the highest grade possible. For example, a sports coat or outer coat might be something that will be quite acceptable at a slightly lower grade.
Cashmere items are generally higher in cost than a similar item made from cotton or some other material; however, you are paying for an item that is truly a luxury. The cashmere comes from the soft down on the underbelly of a particular type of goat found only in very high elevations. Each goat yields only about three ounces of cashmere per year, so its scarcity certainly adds to its price.
