TV listings rely on the reality effect
January 18, 2012One look at the TV listings in the newspapers or on the Internet reveals a plethora of reality shows and celebrity-inspired offerings these days. There are so many popular programmes on all the channels now, and it’s often the case that the viewer has difficulty in deciding which ones to watch when they have a night at home.
The various incarnations of reality talent shows, such as Britain’s Got Talent, The X Factor and Pop Idol have gone from strength to strength over the last decade, and indeed have made stars of a number of people. Every new series is greeted by near-hysteria, reflecting their popularity among a hard-core of fans.
And for those who are already celebrities, there are a number of shows that light up the TV listings pages. They include the ubiquitous Big Brother, which features a large, specially adapted house and a vast array of secret cameras which can record all the action and interaction as the days turn into weeks.
Over the years, Big Brother has given us some of the most memorable TV moments of all, from bitchy in-fighting and aggressive arguments to apparent breakdowns and unexpected romances, so it comes as no surprise to discover that millions of viewers still tune in for their daily fix on a regular basis.
In the winter, we in the UK are treated to a chance to see a group of famous faces attempt to negotiate life in the Australian jungle for several weeks at a time. The ups and downs of what many of them refer to as a ‘journey’ are documented nightly for us, interspersed with humorous comments from everyone’s favourite Geordie scamps Ant and Dec.
Fans of the show know what to expect after so many years, but they still come flooding back every night. Even the infamous Bushtucker Trials, in which celebrities eat and drink some truly foul concoctions, don’t have a negative impact on its popularity. If anything, the show seems to be attracting large numbers of new listeners every year.
With even more reality shows being added to the TV listings on a regular basis, it’s safe to assume the genre will continue to expand. Where it will end, nobody knows, so perhaps the best thing to do is to watch one or two of them and see what all the fuss is about.
